East Sepik | Papua New Guinea Cacao Beans
Cocoa is sourced from communities in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Although the province includes offshore islands and coastal ranges, the Sepik River is its dominant geographic feature. The river catchment spans swamplands, tropical rainforest, floodplains, and mountain areas, and is regarded as one of the Asia-Pacific region’s largest (largely) unpolluted freshwater systems. Production system: Smallholder agroforestry organically grown (200 trees per adult farmer) The cacao is grown organically, but currently not certified. Fermentation: Central Village bases fermentation and drying. Average farm area: 0.5 hectares Main harvest: May–August Annual capacity: More than 200 tonnes Variety: Predominantly Trinitario hybrids. Cacao from East Sepik has had a renaissance, with as many as 18 new clones providing pest and disease resistance. The supply comes from communities that are rural and intricately connected to the land, rivers, and surrounding forests. Households typically rely on subsistence agriculture, supported by fishing, hunting, gathering forest resources, and limited small-scale trade where available. Community life is shaped by extended family relationships, local cooperation, and the guidance of elders or respected community members. Rautini works closely with local partners and producer communities to ensuring careful fermentation and drying.
